Check out Science, August 26, 2005 issue

Worm, et al., Vol 309, pg 1365 in print, describe decreasing blue ocean diversity, but note there are some
hot spots worth saving from the longliners.

The cover on that SCIENCE issue is amazing- looking up through a bait ball surrounded by sharks.... the photographer must have shit his pants.

according to the article, the whole east coast is a major hotspot - no surprise!

There's also another amazing article in the same issue describing the use of DNA hybridization evidence to estimate bacterial community diversity- would you believe 8 billion species/10 gm soil???!!!

Another paper that shows we've been grinding away at oceanic predators. Jeremy Jackson and colleagues had those nice papers out a few years ago about the trophic collapses of oceanic food chains. Have you guys seen any articles in Science or Nature that have demonstrated that based on data?

And, the 8 billion species in 10 grams of soil left me incredulous. Is that hybrindization technique really that reliable? If so, you'd have a darn big clone library.....
